Education teachers are a very diverse group of people. The first teacher is the parent, responsible for a child’s early learning. When the child attends formal school, there are teachers present who have completed teacher training and certification. This usually means a four year university degree and extra training for a traditional elementary level teacher. For higher grades, and university teaching, it may be necessary for the teacher to complete a higher education degree such as a Master or Doctorate.
Non-standard educational institutions, and private education may
employ those who are not degreed in teaching, but who have life
experience in a specialized area. Much teaching is also done by
persons who are assistants or teaching interns. Computerized self
education is overseen by educational specialists, but there may not be a teacher actively
involved, for example, in the case of programmed learning that is
done by testing. Direct mail courses have educational consultation
available, but little contact is necessary.
Teachers can be anyone who teaches a skill or transmits knowledge
to another, regardless of whether or not they have a teaching
degree. Sunday school teachers are frequently just people who enjoy
religion and children, but do not have a teaching degree. The
ability to communicate and subject knowledge are the most important
elements of teaching. Having a degree will allow one to enter
particular employment fields, but teaching does not require having
a degree or certificate.
In most societies, those allowed to become teachers have completed
specific educational requirements, including special courses in
teaching and childhood development. Institutions of higher learning
attract students based on the qualifications of their teachers.
Teachers in basic and secondary level schools receive average pay,
while those with higher degrees teaching in universities receive
higher pay commensurate with their experience and education.
